无有之间 Between Nothing and Something
2024
Inkjet Printing, Carving, Collage

Based on one extremely underexposed photograph, this work discusses what nothing and something mean for photography and viewers.
Due to the extremely dark surroundings, the camera failed to record anything of the scene in front of its lens, and only produced a photograph of nothing. By extracting multiple local details of the underexposed photograph, the distinct areas of nothing within the photograph can be located and cut out for rearranging to build a new photograph of complete nothing. However, nothing to a photograph is something (a photograph) to viewers, until the hollows or carving traces bring some pieces of the photograph away. Finally, the lost areas of the prints become nothing to viewers when they appreciate a photograph.
